alpine, rustic, scenic, active

Zakopane

Mountain air, wooden villas, Tatra trails.

The short version

Get a feel for Zakopane.

Zakopane is Poland's winter and mountain capital, tucked under the Tatra peaks. It is a rustic resort of carved wooden villas in the distinctive Zakopane style, highlander culture and trailheads into the country's only true alpine range.

Best season

December to February for skiing and snow; June to September for hiking to Morskie Oko and Kasprowy Wierch. The muddy shoulder weeks of April and November are best avoided.

Getting around

There is no airport — most people arrive from Kraków in about two hours by bus or car. In town everything is walkable; buses and taxis run to the trailheads at Kuźnice, the Morskie Oko road and the Białka thermal baths.
