romantic, layered, walkable, classic

Kraków

Medieval streets, cellar bars, and deep history.

The short version

Get a feel for Kraków.

Kraków is Poland's best-preserved royal capital — a compact, walkable medieval core that survived WWII largely intact, wrapped around Europe's biggest market square, plus the soulful Kazimierz Jewish quarter. It is the easiest first trip in the country.

Best season

April to June and September to October bring mild weather and thinner crowds; the December Christmas market on the square is a highlight.

Getting around

The centre is very walkable and trams cover the rest. The airport reaches the Old Town by train in about 20 minutes. Easy day trips to Auschwitz-Birkenau (about 1.5 hours) and the Wieliczka Salt Mine (about 30 minutes).
